SECOND YEAR INITIAL PLAN
SECOND YEAR PLAN

Damien Hirst
Damien Hirst
Freeze documentary (only first 10 minutes)
Noel Fielding interviewing Damien Hirst for Channel 4
I like the way Damien Hirst talks about his artwork as well as the work itself. He seems really open about the meaning behind his work and let's people take from it what they want from it -even from taking something that might belong in a museum such as 'Mother and Child' to open the discussion to a different audience is an idea I find really fascinating.

Auguste Rodin
Studying an artist who is more traditional may give me a wider understanding of working in a traditional medium?
As artists often reflect the environment around them, concepts perpetuated by older artists may not be seen as relevant, but I think the imagery used by Auguste Rodin is really interesting and controversial for this period in time. Many artists told him to work in a different way and to stop doing what he was doing, but he didn't listen to them and developed on his ideas despite the controversy he faced and ultimately became a successful artist. I like this idea of self-belief that his works are based upon.
Jeff Koons
The bright colours that Jeff Koons uses are pop-y and imitative of foil balloons, which gives his work an un-serious and childlike tone but in a way that is creative and fresh. He is often compared to Damien Hirst but I find Hirst's themes more mature and deep-so i like both for different qualities and themes.
IDEAS
- Consider re-working a piece from first year or remaking it later in the year to show progression.
- Experiment more with use of scale, a 2D medium would be 'safer' but if in 3D I should use an armature.
- Attempt sculpting using different mediums e.g. wood, digital.
- Make my work more personal as during first year, I tended to just make work for a possible shock-factor (which could've come from Francis Bacon's influence) but this year I want to focus on having stronger meanings behind my work and put more thought into my work too.
- The artists I'm looking into currently tend to have a critical outlook on life; I especially like the religious imagery found in Damien Hirst's work and perhaps this is a theme I would like to look into.
- Jenny Saville states in the video linked above how she is fascinated by surgeries which is a theme that could provide many avenues for me to explore in my work if i chose to look into it-nothing too graphic as gore can distract from the overall meaning of the piece.
- I am interested in 3D animation but I fear that looking into it now and learning how to use the complex software would take too long for me to produce something satisfactory at the end, however I don't want to rule this idea out because a career in the gaming industry in the future is something I'm interested in so I will attempt some experiments of this during the summer and evaluate if I should move on from it or if I could realistically produce something quite cool as an end result.
- Include at least one 2D artist and one traditional artist so that i have a wide variety of subject matter to study and have a wider range of research.
